So beginning of this week(last Thursday) was the beginning of
Carnival. 5 days of parades, costumes, and odd events. Thursday was
old women's day, at least that's the name auf deutsche. An event where
girls find any man wearing a tie, cut off said tie, and then kiss
them. Naturally most missionaries are a bit cautious around this time.
Although I didn't see much happen, I did see a few men with half a tie
and a smile on their face.
The rest of the week we saw different parts. Streets littered with
aftermath, parades with super loud German dance music, and countless
people wearing one-sies (the pajama thingies). No matter who I ask no
one cares to explain this event to me.
This whole time we're working as a Drit. So since the addition of
Elder HolyOak we've gotten along swimmingly and are having a ton of
fun. E. HolyOak and I goof off a bit while E. Davis tries to keep us
focused, it works well haha. One time while a parade was going by E.
HolyOak and I were just dancing away to the rather vulgar German
techno while E. Davis looked at us like we were mad. That'll be a fond
memory.
Today we went on a hunt for a particular type of Bible which would be
quite a nice treasure hunt. We wanted to find an original Martin
Luthor translation of the Bible in Gothic script (which they
originally used before changing to English lettering we use today.)
Our hunt took us first to a few local book stores in which E. Davis
considered buying a straight razor (classy) and E. HolyOak and I got
some 'Offenbach Kickers' stuff (local sports team) apparently everyone
who serves in Offenbach needs something Offenbach Kickers related. Our
next stop was out to the city of Mainz again. After running through
half a dozen museums and churches we ended up running a circle back to
the earlier places and found a book. Thing about the old gothic
writing style is they don't come in small sizes so the entire Bible,
old and New Testament are two separate books and weigh probably 5 lbs.
they're quite impressive books and the older writing is quite
beautiful.
But yeah, so ist das Leben.
Not much else to say this week, usually best to keep the emails shorter anyways.

Pictures
1-Elder HolyOak shows us how small the German streets are.
2-we found some witches during Carnival
3-the Tech Elders went on a split with the Offenbach drit and we all
hung out in the rafters
4-while preaching on a university we found this thing they called "The
statue of Knowledge"
5- A page of the Bible (try reading it and then translating it from German haha)
6-the Offenbach Drit.
Quatsch
Also, can we talk about how cold it still is there? They still get down to freezing every night. Elder Fuller says he does 3 layers instead of his usual 5. Well it looks like spring is here then...I will need to see a picture to prove it.
These were taken earlier in the year. |
But tell me, when was the last time |
that you saw ice chunks floating in a river! |
